[EN] Different manifestations of biological activity of three commercial mixtures (Hallowax) of polichlorinated naphtalenes (PCNs) are studied in batch cultures of a marine diatom (Uitzxchia sp.), and by means of micromanometric methods. Experimental results show a complex effect picture which evolve in time, reflecting an inverse relation between toxicity and mean degree of chlorination in its more defferentiated phase. The most active Hallowax, although determining depressions in dry weight, population density and photosynthetic pigment levels per unit of culture volume, they greatly increase their content per cell. In dark respiration regime, they enhance oxygen consumption, accelerating pigment destruction. The problematic of the dose-response approach in relation with microorganism batch culture, as well as the significance of the effects produced on different parameters is considered, and the possible role of the enzimatic induction mechanisms in the microorganism response to the xenobiotics tested is discussed
