Los plasmas: de la aurora boreal al interior de una estrella, del tubo fluorescente al reactor de fusión

Abstract

Los plasmas constituyen el estado de agregación de la materia más abundante del Universo (aproximadamente el 99% de la materia conocida) y son también los más llamativos, debido a que todos ellos emiten luz. No obstante, los plasmas aparecen en la Tierra de forma minoritaria y quizá por ello, y por su complejidad, el ser humano los ha estudiado y comprendido mucho después que los sólidos, los líquidos y los gases. Los plasmas se manifiestan de formas muy diversas en la naturaleza y, de forma controlada por el hombre, actualmente participan en multitud de avances científicos y procesos tecnológicos. En esta charla se explicarán de forma asequible y con la ayuda de experimentos sencillos, las curiosas características y propiedades de esta clase de materia, se describirán los tipos de plasmas más importantes existentes, se dará una visión general sobre sus múltiples aplicaciones, y se comentarán algunas de las incógnitas y retos que aún presentan.
