Abstract

[EN] Twenty eigth sweet corn inbreds (Zea mays L.) and four field corn inbreds were evaluated for tolerance to pink stem borer (Sesamia nonagrioides Lef.). The pink stem borer is the most important pest of maize in the northwest of Spain. Two artificial infestation methods were employed: one, laying egg masses in the top of the ear, among the silks, and another putting it on the bottom of the ear, between the stem and the shank. The sweet corn inbred lines showed a similar tolerance to the pink stem borer than that exhibited by the field corn lines. All the inbred lines presented some damage, therefore the tolerance would be partial. The inbred EP59 had the best performance. 15125, H1 and H3 manifested a good level of tolerance. These inbred lines could be used to obtain sweet corn germplasm tolerant to Sesamia.
