Abstract

[EN] This paper quantitatively studies the wind effects on the precision of a weighing lysimeter in the Middle Ebro River Valley. The work was performed at Montañana (Zaragoza) with a grass crop during 1997 (May to July) and 1998 (May to September). Different sets of 30-minute reference evapotranspiration (ET0) values were obtained from: a) lysimeter mass readings averaged over different periods (1 to 30 minutes in 1997 and 6 to 30 minutes in 1998), and b) average of two consecutive 30-minute periods. In 1998, it was observed a noticeable increase of the 30-minute mass standard deviation as wind speed increased above 3.5 m s-1. The different sets of 30-minute lysimeter ET0 values were compared with computed ones (FAO Penman-Monteith method). Values of coefficient of determination (R2) and index of agreement (IS) increased and those of root mean square error (RMSE) decreased as the mass averaging period increased. Variation of these statistics among averaging periods was higher for high wind speed periods, particularly those higher than 6.0 m s-1. The negative effect of wind on the quality of lysimeter data decreased in 1998 due to the improvement of the resolution of the electronic equipment used for data collection. The results suggest a minimum 30-minute averaging period of the lysimeter masses recorded in order to obtain reliable 30-minute ET0 values.
