Abstract

[EN]: A group of clays of industrial interest, coming from sedimentary beds situated in the Guadalquivir and Corbones valleys, Seville, has ben studied. The following techniques have been used: chemical, mechanical and ponderal thermal analysis, D. T, A., base exchange capacity. X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy, plasticity water, plasticity, drying shrinkage at 50°C (Bourry's diagrams), firing shrinkage and crushing strength in fired bodies. It is concluded that the main components of these clays are minerals of the montmorillonite group and illites in an advanced stage of transformation to montmorillonoids. They contain small quantities of caolinite and impurities of free silica and hydroxydes. Substantial amounts of mica have also been found. The clays from the Guadalquivir valley contain more montmorillonite and those of the Corbones valley more degraded illite and caolinite. The natural samples contain important amounts (about 30 %) of finely grained calcite. The technological tests suggest that these materials have good ceramic properties.
