[EN] The aim of this article is to shed light on the social presentation of the body among North Africans. The analysis is developed along two axes from a gender perspective: 1) the relationship between body and culture, concretely the ways in which North Africans used the social presentation of the body during the colonial and postcolonial period as a way of distinguishing themselves from the colonizers; and 2) female bodies and their collective representation, specifically the role of women as guardians of collective identity through use of the hijab. These aspects are considered not only in relation to Islam but also to other cultural domains of gender, religious practices, law and space in order to develop a more nuanced understanding of North African conceptions of the body.
