Abstract

[EN]In samples taken at various times of the end of the growth period of sugar beer crops, in farms of the province of Salamanca and in a nitrogen fertilization trial, it has been found that nitrogen concentration, both in the petiole and the root, is inversely correlated with the sucrose content and the purity of the juice of the root, and directly related to α-amine nitrogen compounds. Nitrogen concentration increases with the level of nitrogen fertilizer and in the root it is synergistic with potassium concentration, as phosphorus and potassium are between them. The calcium concentration in the petiole is also positively related to nitrogen in the group of farms, while in the fertilization experiments it is the magnesium concentration which is related, positevely also, to nitrogen. All these findings lead to the conclussion of the great importance of nitrogen nutrition in this plant, to study the variations of the so called technological quality of sugar beet. Therefore, it is considered necessary a comprehensive study of nitrogen nutrition, throughout the growth cycle, with special emphasis on nitrogen metabolism.
