Se trata de una situación especialmente frecuente cuando la superficie, antes de ser pintada, ha estado expuesta por algún tiempo en una atmósfera agresiva generalmente en una atmósfera de tipo industrial o marino. Durante muchos años de estudio, se ha comprobado que en muchos de estos casos la superficie metálica, incluso después de ser chorreada con abrasivo y aparentemente parecer limpia, contenía ciertas cantidades de unos contaminantes no detectables a simple vista. Estos contaminantes resultaron ser diferentes tipos de sales solubles, tales como sulfatos, cloruros, nitratos, etc., bastante difíciles de elimimar por completo.
