Abstract

[EN] Because of its geographic situation, historically there has been in the Canary Islands a great interest in their environment and the Prehispanic aboriginal population. During the 19th century controversies raged about the nature, origin and degree of cultural development of the so called “guanches” aboriginal peoples of the Islands. In this paper an analysis is made of the great role played in those studies by the local Scientific Societies, dedicated to the Natural and Human Sciences. At the end of the 19th century a noble and civilized image was constructed of the aborigines, which include the practice of some kind of writing. This idea was a part of the general paradigm considered necessary for the creation of a modern Canarian political identity.
