Abstract

[EN]The fertility of the soils of the border zone with Portugal, between Sierra de la Culebra and Cordillera Central, is studied. From North to South rainfall decreases, the mean temperature increases and therefore so does the aridity index. The prevailing rocks are shale and Paleozoic granites, generally acid. The most frequent soil units are: humic acid Cambisol, dystric Cambisol, dystric-eutric Cambisol, humic Acrisol, gleyc Acrisol and Gleysol. The soils are acid of strongly acid, very poor in phosphorus and calcium. Consequently it is a marginal zone for cropping. Within the zone is the Arribes of Duero territory, with mediterranean climate and crops; the agricultural future of this territory depends on the control of erosion and thus human action may be considered as the main factor affecting soil fertility.
