After 80 h of milling the elemental powders, mechanical alloying of Al 90Fe5Nd5 produces a nanostructured composite, which consists of nanocrystals of fcc-Al and some Al11Nd3 precipitates, embedded in an amorphous matrix. This composite has a Vickers hardness of 2.8 GPa and is thermally stable up to about 340 °C. Above this temperature it decomposes into Al11N3 and Al 90Fe2Nd5 phases.
