Abstract

La variscita de Palazuelo de las Cuevas (Zamora) es AlPO4.2H2O con un 0.08% de Cr203 que le comunica un color verde esmeralda (en árabe Zamorat=Esmeralda), se trata de un ejemplar tipo incluido en el Dana System, en la ficha de DRX de la ASTM Messbach 25-18 y en American Mineralogist desde 1972. Sin embargo, la caracterización de la muestra de variscita por DRX es compleja porque además de variscita Messbach (rómbico del grupo espacial Pcab) contiene algo de variscita Lucin >(polimorfo del mismo grupo espacial Pcab, ASTM 25-19) y un 15% de meta-variscita (Monoclínico, ASTM 15-311). En el presente trabajo, se muestran transiciones de fase irreversibles a corto plazo, a bajas temperaturas (entre 60ºC y 80ºC), que pudieran explicar la complejidad de las determinaciones y clasificaciones por DRX. Para el estudio de estas transformaciones de fase se ha creado un accesorio termo-criogénico para difractometros de rayos X antiguos que permite estabilizar in situ la temperatura de la muestra desde 8ºC a 215ºC durante el análisis por DRX. Funciona por irradiacion termofotonica y refrigeración por aire con una lámpara halógena lo que permite simular alteraciones y solarizaciones de materiales en condiciones medioambientales. Este nuevo sistema denominado SOSXRD (del ingles Simultaneously.Optical Stimulated X-Ray Diffraction) es una modificación del método del polvo de DRX que incluye: a) un sistema de refrigeración externo por aire acondicionado focalizado hacia la cámara de rayos X, b) un termopar y una lámpara ha1ogena dentro de la cámara de difracción, c) un controlador electrónico de temperatura y d) unos tiristores para regular el voltaje en modo de ángulo de fase. El método SOSXRD en rampa termal detecto una transición de fase en el intervalo 60 a 80ºC. Posteriormente, 108 análisis isotermales (a 600ºC, 650ºC, ya 700ºC) mostraron que el proceso es extremadamente gradual, progresivo e irreversible tanto en temperatura como en el tiempo produciéndose los mayores cambios durante la secuencia isotermal a 650ºC (25 perfiles durante 8.30 horas). Estas observaciones sugieren cambios de fase temporalmente irreversibles en condiciones naturales para las variscitas expuestas al sol y la existencia de centenares de términos intermedios entre los clásicos polimorfos de variscitas Messbach y Lucin.
