Abstract

[EN]In the cities of Spanish America, and particularly in the secondary range ones which were not court or viceroyalty headquarters, as is the case of Guayaquil, the town council had major roles in cultural and educative matters, especially in two areas: schools of first letters and festivities. It is studied here the performance of Guayaquil’s town council in the educative matter, as well as other important cultural events, such as those related to ceremonies and popular festivities. It is taken as an example the celebrations held in the city of Guayaquil from September 23rd to October 13th in the year 1747 to mark the beginning of the reign of Ferdinand VI.
