Modificaciones corporales en la tradición africana

Abstract

El gran poder simbólico que toda sociedad otorga al cuerpo se pone de manifiesto vistiéndolo, ornamentándolo, cuidando su presencia, controlando sus movimientos o incluso modificándolo. Y por lo que se refiere a este último aspecto, el de las modificaciones corporales, las sociedades africanas nos ofrecen un amplio e interesante campo de estudio. El autor entiende por modificaciones corporales aquellas técnicas como las del tatuaje, escarificación, piercing, deformación y mutilación, técnicas destinadas a producir alteraciones permanentes o semipermanentes de manera voluntaria en una o más partes del cuerpo. El tatuaje y la escarificación aunque impliquen técnicas distintas se hallan desde el punto de vista funcional estrechamente relacionados. Se conocen prácticamente en todo el planeta, pero África destaca precisamente por la generalización y gran variedad de estas técnicas de modificación corporal, especialmente por lo que se refiere a la escarificación.
