Abstract

[The "Gauss Peak Spectrum" mathematical method was studied and optimized in our laboratory. This work shows the protocol followed for the operation of a method we consider important in assesssing the effect of heavy metals in vascular herbaceous species. Results are shown for four pasture grasses, which grow on the site of abandoned silver mine in Toledo province. In this enclave grasses are the species with most pastoral value for Iivestock nutrition as well as for the abundant wildlife (the site is a hunting ground). The top soil layer has very high levels of Pb and Zn, and Cd and Cu are above acceptable reference levels for soil in several places. The method allows quantification of chlorophylls affected by Cu, Zn and Cd in the analyzed species (Agrostis castellana, Arrhenatherum bulbosum, Dactylisglomerata, Micropyrum genellum). Chlorophyll-a is mostly affected by Cu, even though zn is the metal most accumulated in these species]
