Abstract

[There are two main subterranean clover subspecies in Spain: Trifolium subterraneum subsp. subterraneum and I subterraneum subsp. oxaloides Nyman. The review of the data we got in many inventories, has led us to conduct a study to know factors involved in the distribution of the subspecies in the territory. Initially we focused on the province of Toledo (the northernmost place in which the subsp. oxaloides is found) to study comparatively the two subspecies, because both are represented there. We found subsp. subterraneum in 47 sites and oxaloides in 16; in 9 of the last, oxaloides grew up alone and in the other 9 accompanied by subterraneum. We studied various biotic and abiotic variables of the specimens and their habitats, in order to observe differences between them. Results show that dry weight , plant size and local abundance present marked differences. The inf1uence of low temperatures in the ir distribution and the response to various edaphic factors show ecological differences between both of them. The 5° C isotherm in the mean air temperature in January and the increasing acidity of the soils seem to c1early explain the limitations in the distribution of subsp. oxaloides.]
