Las arcillas en formulaciones farmacéuticas

Abstract

La formulación de un producto químico en un determinado preparado farmacéutico es un paso clave del que depende la efectividad y seguridad del producto, desde el punto de vista comercial. Para conseguir una formulación adecuada es necesario conocer no sólo la naturaleza del fármaco sino la de los excipientes, es decir. de aquellos ingredientes que imprimen al producto las propiedades físicas y químicas deseadas. El uso de minerales como medicamentos es una práctica muy antigua, haciéndose mención por primera vez a este uso en la obra "De Materia Médica" de Dioscórides (60 d.C.). Recientemente Galán y col. (1985) han realizado un estudio sobre minerales utilizados en especialidades farmacéuticas así como sus fines terapéuticos. El presente trabajo se va a limitar al estudio del uso de las arcillas en formulaciones farmacéuticas. Las arcillas tienen dos vías preferentes de administración: la oral y la tópica. En cada una de ellas, las arcillas pueden usarse como principio activo "per se", en protectores intestinales y dermatológicos, ejerciendo su acción en el tracto gastrointestinal o sobre la piel, debido a su elevada capacidad de adsorción, y como coadyuvante o excipiente inerte en lubricantes, comprimidos, emulgentes, etc., basándose en sus excelentes propiedades reológicas.
