La survivance du carnaval dans la théorie du théâtre donne lieu à l'étude de trois conceptions qui jalonnent l'histoire du théâtre espagnol au XX' siècle : la confusion des concepts de théâtre et de carnaval dans les essais théoriques de Rafael Cansinos-Asséns, l'exploitation des éléments les plus spectaculaires et erotiques de la fête dans des revues comme El Principe Carnaval, de José Juan Cadenas y R. Asensio Más, et aussi la création par Ramón María del Valle- Inclán d'un code grotesque et satirique dans les esperpentos publiés sous le titre de Martes de Carnaval.
