Abstract

The influence of a metalic sulphide mine explotation on the Guadiamar river waters, and on sediments, soils and three vegetable species (Mentha rotundifolia, Holoschoenus vulgaris and Typha latifolia) from its banks was studied. Downstream from the mine, heavy metal contents of water, soils, sediments and plants were higher than the corresponding from a non-polluted area upstream from the influence of the mine. Heavy metal pollution of water decreases as distance downstream from the mine increases. Sediment and soil heavy metal pollution depends not only on the distance to the pollution source but on the river flow and nature of the effluents. Generaly Mentha rotundifolia aod Typha latifolia present higher heavy metal accumulation tendency than Holoschoenus vulgaris. is.
