Abstract

[EN]This work assessed the use of rainfed grasslands based on lucerne in rotation with cereal grazed by sheep during a year divided in 3 periods: Period 1 (P1): 8 sheep/ha at maintenance state grazing continuesly 9 fenced plots of 1 ha. Period 2 (P2): All (P1) sheep from late pregnancy to early lactation indoors eating hay from the grasslands plus concentrates. Period 3 (P3): 22.6 sheep/ha with 1.2 lambs/sheep grazing continuesly 3 fenced plots of 1 ha. until the lambs reached 25 ± 1 Kg liveweight. Each period had 3 treatments depending on the lucerne variety (vty.) grazed: Europe vty., lot l (T1), Adyta vty., lot 2 (T2) and Tierra de Campos ecotype, lot 3 (T3). The main results showed that: 1) During P1, T3 sheep put on weight and body condition more than T2 and T1 (P<0.001). 2) During P2, T1 sheep gained weight and body condition more than T2 and T3 in late pregnancy (P<0.05), lost less at birth (P<0.01) and lost less during early lactation (no significant). 3) During P3, T3 lambs gained more liveweight than T2 and T1 (P<0.001).
