[EN]At the beginning of 1808 a new factor destabilized the political situation in Cuba: the threat of a British attack. The danger of a British expedition directed against the Cuban coast became a real problem, beyond the real intentions of the British. The risk of attack became an important argument held by the Captain General to put the island into a state of defence with the collaboration of the Royal Consulate, Intendancy, Naval Command and various town councils throughout the island, especially Havana and Santiago de Cuba. These arrangements revealed the inability of the veteran troops, as well as the great importance of the militia.
