The weathering of building stone is a natural process in which physical, chemical and biological agents are involved, similar to soil formation. Among the biological agents the atmophytic cyanobacleria and algae are primary colonizers due to their phototrophism and low nutrient requirements. Their presence on and in the stone may represent a contribution to its microbial deterioration.
