Abstract

La constatación de que nuestro planeta se encuentra inmerso en un proceso de calentamiento global, al que subyace la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero como consecuencia de la actividad humana, ha centrado la atención en el impacto que este cambio puede provocar sobre la sociedad y el medio ambiente. Los ecosistemas polares se vislumbran entre los más vulnerables del planeta, aunque aún no se ha evaluado suficientemente el alcance de los efectos derivados de esta alteración. El Año Polar Internacional que ahora estamos celebrando –cuyas actividades se desarrollan desde marzo de 2007 hasta marzo de 2009– ofrece una ocasión particularmente apropiada para cubrir esta laguna en nuestro conocimiento. Este libro recoge la segunda serie de debates organizados conjuntamente por el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) y la Fundación BBVA. En sus páginas, un elenco de científicos internacionales de gran prestigio revisa el estado actual del conocimiento científico existente para, a través de su síntesis, evaluar el posible impacto del calentamiento climático sobre los ecosistemas polares
