Corrosion of Electrolyticalty Gilded Silver: A Case Study

Abstract

Corrosion of electrolytically gilded silver was analyzed. Red spots were observed after eight months' storage in an indoor environment. Gold chloride (AuCl3) was identified as the origin of the corrosion phenomenon, which is attributed to contamination coming from the electroplating processes. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) techniques were utilized.
