El exilio en Puerto Rico de los artistas españoles de la diáspora republicana de 1939

Abstract

Puerto Rico sin duda prestó una singular acogida a los intelectuales y creadores españoles desplazados por el forzado exilio y la movilidad surgidos a raíz del estallido de la guerra civil española. Para la mayor parte de los artistas españoles que arribaron a la isla boricua, que –al verse el país obligado a aplicar las restrictivas leyes y normas de emigración estadounidenses– no fueron muy numerosos, en buena medida se trató de un segundo exilio. Exilio con el que remediar su precaria situación, por lo general originada por la inestabilidad ante los vaivenes de las políticas receptivas en los países del área antillana y sus pocas expectativas laborales, aunque en algunos casos también se trató de la seducción ante las oportunidades ofrecidas por la necesitada escena artística y docente puertorriqueña, en contraste con la saturación detectada en sus exilios previos en países como Estados Unidos o México. De este modo, artistas españoles como Cristóbal Ruiz, José Vela Zanetti, Francisco Vázquez Díaz “Compostela”, Ángel Botello Barros, Esteban Vicente, Hipólito Hidalgo de Caviedes, Eugenio (Fernández) Granell o Carlos (López) Marichal terminaron recalando en Puerto Rico. Unos de forma transitoria y, otros, de manera permanente. Por lo general, estos artistas se acoplaron bien respecto al proyecto cultural y político puertorriqueño y sus instituciones de acogida, propiciando en aquella escena cultural un verdadero impulso reforzador de planos como el pedagógico, el expositivo o el galerístico, aunque también en otros como el de la actuación favorecedora y difusora del hispanismo. Se analiza aquí, por tanto, la periodización y consecuencias del desarrollo de su oficio y actuación en aquella tierra caribeña.
