Abstract

[EN]The content of N,P,K,Ca,Mg and Na in semiarid grasslands in the "dehesas" of the province of Salamanca was studied. The macronutrient content of herbage and three botanical fractions (grasses, legumes, and forbs) at two topographic positions (upper and lower zones) was observed for two years. The nutrient concentrations have been compared with the minimum requirements for ruminants suggested by the United States National Research Council. Generally, herbage and each of the three botanical fractions in both topographical zones can be deficient for livestock regarding P and Na. However, excluding grasses, the contents of Ca and K are adequate. Herbage from the upper zone and grasses from both zones are usually deficient in Mg. The N content in herbage, grasses and forbs of the upper zones is below the minimum recommended. Therefore, legumes have the most adequate profile, with respect to mineral content, for livestock. Generally, the lower zones are more adequate for livestock nutrition because their macronutrient levels and dry matter production are greater.
