El horizonte sómbrico se define como un horizonte subsuperficial, oscuro, presente en suelos minerales, que se forma en condiciones de drenaje libre y contiene humus iluvial no asociado a aluminio ni a dispersión por sodio. Se relaciona con condiciones de frío y humedad, en altiplanicies o montañas de regiones tropicales y subtropicales.
