Abstract

El Monasterio de Santa María de la Rábida, construido entre los siglos XIV y xv, se erige en la desembocadura del río Tinto en Huelva. El edificio ha sufrido diversas vicisitudes a lo largo de los siglos, tales como terremotos, destrucciones y abandonos, hasta que en 1981, con motivo del cuarto centenario del descubrimiento de América, se inicia su última reconstrucción. Durante esos siglos se produjo el deterioro de una serie de pinturas murales medievales del claustro interior y la iglesia, que han sido restauradas recientemente. Entre 1929 y 1930 Daniel Vázquez Díaz decora la portería con un conjunto de murales concebidos como el "Poema del Descubrimiento". Éstos están realizados sobre los muros originales del monasterio, que le sirven de soporte, y sobre los que construye un enlucido de arena y cal, de textura rugosa, en el que aplica los pigmentos utilizando la técnica de pintura al fresco. En la actualidad los frescos se encuentran en tan grave estado de alteración que se han hecho imprescindibles la adopción de medidas que eviten su progresivo deterioro.
