El antiguo Egipto como mensaje alegórico y propagandístico en ceremoniales y acontecimientos regios de Felipe II

Abstract

El antiguo Egipto en ceremoniales y acontecimientos regios relativos a Felipe II se inserta en el marco de recepción del mito egipcio en la Monarquía española del Quinientos. Un Egipto transformado por completo que nunca logró ensombrecer a Grecia y Roma, si bien ambas tuvieron que compartir su espacio con un omnipresente país del Nilo. La sugestión que la civilización faraónica –poseedora de una sabiduría ancestral– causó en el Renacimiento se tradujo, sobre todo, en el interés humanista por los jeroglíficos egipcios a raíz del hallazgo en 1419 de los Hieroglyphica de Horapolo (siglo V). La publicación de éste y otros tratados que recogían el testigo horapoliano motivaron la eclosión de un repertorio emblemático entendido a modo de lenguaje jeroglífico renacentista que, unido a una percepción de Egipto de implicaciones complejas, fue acogido en el contexto hispánico de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, encajando en la cultura simbólica y política del momento; contribuyendo a modelar parte de la imagen del Rey Prudente; y ostentando un lugar específico en el ejercicio propagandístico y conmemorativo de la Monarquía hispánica.
