Los «otros» campesinos: Los portugueses y el cultivo de la vid en Canarias durante el siglo XVII

Abstract

Es conocida la participación en Canarias del contingente portugués en los repartos de tierras a finales del siglo XVI y la puesta en cultivo de éstas, así como el destacado papel en la introducción de cultivos que, como el de la caña de azúcar, transformarían la economía del Archipiélago. Sin embargo, algunos de estos agricultores portugueses dejarán tempranamente la producción azucarera en favor de tierras de riego para la vid. Para entender las circunstancias que motivaron este cambio en la principal actividad exportadora del Archipiélago, disertaremos sobre el papel de la comunidad portuguesa en el desarrollo de la economía vitivinícola canaria del Seiscientos. Por último, será de nuestro interés abordar los vínculos entre la explotación de este cultivo en Canarias y su comercialización en las principales mercados portugueses.
