Poder local e intermediación con la administración real: El concejo de la villa de San Clemente durante la Guerra de Sucesión

Abstract

La guerra de Sucesión será un periodo que permita a las oligarquías locales esgrimir sus méritos ante la Monarquía con el fin de ascender socialmente. Para ello habrán de poner de manifiesto su poder sobre el resto de las élites y de la población. En este contexto, destacará la figura del corregidor que, ejerciendo su poder, hará méritos para mejorar en su «cursus honorum» no dudando en enfrentarse con las élites locales de la villa. Entre estas surgirán asimismo conflictos por ocupar los distintos puestos dentro del Concejo. Los miembros de la élite local aprovecharán la contribución de San Clemente en la retaguardia castellana para la defensa de la frontera con el reino de Valencia y su papel como punto fundamental de la intendencia del ejército de las Dos Coronas, para obtener reconocimientos y mercedes por parte de Felipe V.
