Métodos moleculares para el estudio de la diversidad microbiana en ambientes naturales

Abstract

En los últimos años se ha demostrado que la diversidad de microorganismos en nuestro planeta es enorme. Para llegar a estos conocimientos ha sido esencial el empleo de métodos moleculares basados en los ácidos nucleicos, tanto ADN como ARN. Hoy en día existen distintas opciones para llevar a cabo estudios de comunidades microbianas en ambientes naturales los cuales, en general, se caracterizan por una gran complejidad debido a la gran variedad de microorganismos que los constituyen. En esta ocasión, nos plantearemos distintas posibilidades para iniciar estudios relativamente sencillos de comunidades microbianas naturales y conseguir con ello la información necesaria. Aunque el empleo de métodos moleculares ha dado un impulso enorme al avance de la microbiología ambiental, no hemos de olvidar la importancia del cultivo de microorganismos aunque generalmente no sea una tarea sencilla. Hoy por hoy, los cultivos son necesarios para llegar a conocer la fisiología de la gran mayoría de microorganismos de los que aún se desconoce. Distintos ejemplos concretos nos permitirán introducir problemas, necesidades y conclusiones a obtener a partir de estudios moleculares de comunidades microbianas. Entre estos ejemplos están, por ejemplo, un caso de comunidades microbianas del Parque Nacional de Doñana, microorganismos en ambientes específicos de las Islas Canarias y tapetes microbianos termófilos. La diversidad microbiana es tan elevada que plantea problemas de estudio en sistemas complejos como pueden ser la mayoría de comunidades microbianas naturales.
