Abstract

La primera interrelación importante de la Química Orgánica con la Geología tuvo lugar en los años treinta, cuando el químico alemán Alfred Treibs aisló e identificó una serie de de metaloporfirinas correlacionables con tetrapirroles de clorofilas, en pizarras bituminosas y petróleos. Esta fue la primera evidencia de que el origen del petróleo era, en parte, biológico y de que entre sus condiciones de formación no intervinieron necesariamente elevadas temperaturas (Treibs, 1935).Prácticamente desde entonces nace la GEOQUIMICA ORGANICA (G.O.) como disciplina científica independiente, dentro de las Ciencias de la tierra, que se ocupa, genéraicamente, de estudiar la distribución, origen y evolución de compuestos bioquímicos en la geosfera, incluyendo medios contemporanero, sedimentos recientes y antiguos, carbones, petróleos, etc., extendiéndose así la química orgánica de los productos naturales a todo el complejo ciclo del carbono en la Naturaleza. La GEOQUIMICA ORGANICA es la disciplina matriz de todas aquellas, como la Biogeoquímica o la Geomicrobiología, que estudian la vida como fuerza geológica y está íntimamente emparentada con la Paleontología y la Estratigrafía, en cuanto que todas ellas pretenden el mejor conocimiento del “registro fósil” tanto en extensión como en profundidad, para conocer su significado en sus aspectos biológicos y geológicos.
