The study of the grinding effects on clay minerals is a subject of great interest because is a very common process in the industry and research laboratory. Very little is known of the effects of dry grinding on sepiolite, which is widely used in the industry. In this study, Vallecas sepiolite was subjected to dry grinding in a ball mill for various periods of time. Changes induced during the comminution process were examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), specific surface area measurements, DTA-TG and 1R-spectroscopy.
