Abstract

[EN]: After the failure of the Aznalcóllar mine dam (25/04/98), several works were carried out in order to remediate the soils. These works consisted: a) removal of the deposited sludge together with the contaminated top soil layer to a maximum depth of 20 cm, and b) the application of amendments. As a consequence of these works variable amounts of sludge were buried into the soil in an random way. This produced an increase in the concentrations of trace elements. The use of heavy machinery during the remediation works affected negatively the physical properties of these soils. We have studied the spatial variability of the hydraulic properties and the total concentrations of trace elements in the soils under remediation in two zone of the Guadiamar river valley affected by the mine-tailing spill. These zone were: Los Lagares (loam clay soil) and vado del Quema (loamy soil). In each zone a sampling grid was established with node at 50 by 50 m covering a surface of 10 ha with a total of 40 sampling points. In these points were measured in situ the hydraulic properties of the surface soil layer in the range near saturation, and soil samples were taken at the depths of 0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm in which the total concentrations of S, As, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn were determined. The analysis of results was carried out using geostatistical methods. In both zones, the coefficients of variation of the hydraulic conductivity were greater than 70%, and the semivariograms fitted to spherical or linear models. The high variability of the hydraulic conductivity is strongly related with the variability of soil texture. The total concentrations of the trace elements showed also a high spatial variability and their semivariograms showed some spatial structure. In general, these semivariograms fitted to spherical or linear models.
