Abstract

La historia del ferrocarril cubano esta ligada a la de la produccion azucarera. No obstante, abusar de esta vinculacion como hipotesis y metodologia ha impedido plantearse cuestiones de indole comparativo que, desde nuestro punto de vista, resultan esenciales para entender el desarrollo ferroviario insular. Aunque el origen y naturaleza de los ferrocarriles publicos cubanos no se diferencia de los de otros paises con estructuras economicas monoexportadoras, sus resultados son muy distintos de estos ultimos y suponen una experiencia inedita en america latina. La expansion del cultivo del azucar por toda la isla doto a cuba de una red ferroviaria publica de dimensiones proporcionales (km. De via / km2 de superficie y habitante) en el continente y determino el surgimiento de una red ferroviaria industrial que dobla en extension a aquellas primera. En estas condiciones, las lineas de servicio publico se vieron favorecidas y perjudicadas a la vez por el desarrollo azucarero, incluso consiguieron ciertas independencias de este ultimo, lo que les permitio sobrevivir en el momento que la mayoria de los paises con estructuras economicas similares a la cubana comenzaron a cerrar sus lineas al tráfico.
