Abstract

El Pb es un metal tóxico cuyo uso extensivo durante siglos ha derivado en la liberación de este elemento al medio ambiente, resultando potencialmente peligroso para la salud pública. La exposición de los organismos a este elemento puede causar graves problemas para la salud, afectando a múltiples sistemas del organismo, como el sistema nervioso, sanguíneo, digestivo, cardiovascular o el sistema renal. Afecta particularmente al sistema nervioso de niños, incluso con muy bajos niveles de exposición, causando daños neurológicos irreversibles (García-Lestón, 2010). Si bien el Pb se encuentra en el medio de forma natural, los niveles más altos y peligrosos están relacionados con actividades antrópicas. A pesar de que la gran mayoría de procesos industriales que liberan Pb al medio han sido sustituidos por otros con menor incidencia en el medioambiente, este elemento sigue jugando un papel importante en ciertos ámbitos como en la fabricación de baterías y componentes electrónicos, pigmentos, pinturas, vidrios, aleaciones metálicas y, especialmente, en la industria armamentística.
