Abstract

[EN] Data are presented relative to the radon222 generating power of different Galician prairie soils-developed upon granite and gneiss parent material, being the mean rain-fall about 160 cm., and comparisons with a variety of several World Great Soils Groups are made. The curies of Rn222 escaping from 2.500 grams of soils material, at equilibrium with its parent radium, in some of Galician soils is much greater than in the other world great groups compared, reaching a maximum of 25 x 10- 10 curies per liter of soil atmosphere activity or 96 x 10-14 curies per gram of dry soil Middle and lower part of the soil profile showed, in general, higher generating power but a poor correlation was found between this and the clay fraction of the soil, although the maximum activity corresponds to the soil of the higher -11%- clay content. Values of radon released by the soil in boiling water and ammonium suspensions are also given. The radon generating power of the ammonium solution is greater than the water suspensions and than the one of the original soil material. The accumulation of Pb in soils and its absorption by natural plants -Ulex nanus, Pteris aquilina and Carinephorus canescens- seems to be of poor correlation with the radon generation, even though the soil of higher radon generated is the one of major Pb concentration in soils and plants.
