Abstract

[EN] Tuberculosis is a highly contagious infectious disease of cattle and goats which has been seldom diagnosed in sheep. This study shows the preliminary findings in an extensively managed mixed flock formed by sheep and goats, where several ewes have shown progressive loss of weight and wool during the last moths. Mycobacterium caprae was cultured from samples taken during the necropsy of two sheep showing lesions consistent with tuberculosis. A subsequent investigation found a specific cellular immune response against M. bovis antigens in a high number of animals (12/27), suggesting that up to 40% of sheep from this flock could be infected.
