Abstract

One may expect to find in Chapter four of OSMNS, entitled “Natural Selection, or the Survival of the fittest” what would be the central part of the work: The Exposition of the "Theory" that explains the origin of species. Because this and no other is the role of a scientific theory: to explain. There are two possibilities: first, that natural selection is a scientific theory, and then as such it is an explanation of the transformation of species and second, that natural selection is not a scientific theory. The very title of the chapter suggests the second since the survival of the fittest does not explain anything. But to solve the dilemma let’s analyze in some detail the chapter.
