Alterations of soil organic material in mineral soils after controlled thermal heating

Abstract

In particular, Mediterranean regions are frequently affected by vegetation fires. To elucidate the impact of such fires on the chemical and physical properties of the soil as well as on the chemical composition of the soil organic matter, two soils under forest (O horizon, Lithic Leptosols under Quercus ilex and Pinus pinaster) and an agriculturally used soil (Ap horizon, Luvisol) were thermally treated at 350°C in three steps up to 600 s.
