Abstract

[EN] From the review of some examples, mainly dealing with cephalopod populations, the relationships between biological and atmospheric-oceanographic factors is shown. Environmental effects on marine populations dynamic is evidenced both to small (Galician upwelling events) and global scale (El Niño/ENSO and Antarctic Circumpolar Current instabilities). The influence of environmental factors on the physiology of some marine organisms is stated from the review of studies carried out on the Galician cultured mussel. The reviewed examples clearly indicated the need for undertaking interdisciplinary works, which allow to develop an integrate understanding of the interactions between physical parameters, biogeochemical cycles and marine food webs. This approach would provide a more realistic view of the large-scale, naturally occurring variations of marine resources. Fishery management strategies must be flexible enough to include delayed responses to environmental variations. Development of this integral knowledge requires inputs from a variety of disciplines, coordinate research programmes with permanent systems to obtain long series of accurate data on atmospheric and oceanographic parameters, as well as the biomass variability of the non exploited marine populations, and catches and catch per unit effort of exploited marine resources. Whether or not the irregular observed fluctuations of marine populations are mathematical chaotic series is discussed.
