[EN] The author’s intention with this paper is to shed so me analytical light on a subject crammed with clichés, falsehoods, interests and mistaken forecasts, which have been repeated for the last three quarters of a century. It starts off by ruling out some mistakes regarding the actual name of the demographic phenomenon in question and by explaining concisely what the causes are. The alternative proposal is to use the generational approach and empirical investigation, instead of the traditional transverse perspective and preconceived notions on ages that characterised studies on the I subject. By way of example, merely as proposals on which to base the investigation, we set forth some of the consequences which may be deduced from the change of perspective and which prove quite different from the normal ones.
