Abstract

[EN]: The three main landscapes in W an SW Spain: "monte" (shrubland), "dehesa" (grassland with scattered trees) and "ribera" (riparian vegetation) are connected in a functional way forming a repetitive pattern. The traditional land use management of this system is considered with special reference to the game. The Guadalupejo River basin (Cáceres and Badajoz provinces) has been selected as study unit. Its main biotope characteristics are described together with vegetation types: shrub, grassland and riparian vegetation. These types are shown as results of the interaction between lithology, geomorphology, pedology and man management with the potential vegetation, under mediterranean climate conditions. The "monte-dehesa-ribera" system forms a network of diverse habitats that differ in structure, stability and productivity. Game faune integrates their explotation on space and time in a complementary way over the year. this strategy is specially favourable under the highly fluctuating conditions prevaling under mediterranean climates.
