Abstract

La búsqued a de una calidad mejorada y de una funcionalidad de los productos manufacturados incita a los fabricantes de materiales tecnológicos a preguntarse cada vez más a menudo sobre la superficie de sus materiales y sobre los medios de controlarla mejor. El mundo del vidrio no ha escapado a esta evolución y la mejora de las propiedades de los productos existentes y el aporte de nuevas funciones se efectúa hoy en día en gran medida actuando sobre la superficie del vidrio. En efecto, sin desestimar la importancia del volumen, la sujperficie influye en ciertas propiedades básicas del vidrio, en particular en la resistencia mecánica, las propiedades opticas y la intera|:ción físico-química con su entorno. En este artículo, se hace hincapié en las propiedades físico-químicas de la superficie de los vidrios de silicato, describiendo los sitios superficiales y su reactividad, la energía de la superficie del vidrio y su mojabilidad, las características de una superficie "real" del vidrio, y el papel del agua sobre las propiedades mecánica^ del vidrio
