Between 21 and 27 November 2008 we observed the presence of diurnal raptors spe- cies in five habitats nearby Calama city, in the precordilleran plateau of the Atacama desert, Chile, at 2000 m. Five species have been recorded: Gurney’s Buzzard B. poecilochrous restricted to the fluvial canyons and gullies of Loa river where this species breeds; being this the first record of their presence and reproduction in the region, besides being the lowest altitude known for this species that occupies al- titudes above 3000 m in the rest of their distributional range. The other species recorded occupy a variety of different habitats: B. polyosoma lives together with B. poecilochrous but in different habitats, the former is present in a variety of habitats, including xerophytic open wooded areas, bushes and dispersed trees and river gorges areas, where also Falco sparverius, F. femoralis and Phalcoboenus megalopterus can be found. We comment Gurney’s Buzzard concerning previous distribution records in Chile, particularly the presence in the Antofagasta region. In this zone B. poecilochrous is hunting hovering over the plains and adjacent vegetation of the border of the river, an oasis amidst the desert. Several individuals were observed in the same territory, the dark morph in larger proportion than the light morph
