El desarrollo de los refractarios básicos ha estado estrechamente ligado a los cambios experimentados por la industria siderúrgica como consecuencia de la búsqueda de una mejora en la calidad del acero. Hasta finales del siglo XIX, todos los refractarios utilizados en siderurgia eran de tipo ácido. Con la introducción, en 1879, del proceso Thomas, que implica el uso de escorias de cal para eliminar el azufre existente en el baño de acero, surge la necesidad de emplear un refractario compatible de carácter básico y se introducen los primeros refractarios básicos
