Importancia de la gestión forestal en los cambios recientes de la composición y estructura de los bosques mediterráneos

Abstract

Este estudio ilustra y cuantifica un ejemplo de cambio reciente en la composición de los bosques mediterráneos mediado por las actividades humanas. Se han cuantificado los cambios en la compo- sición de los bosques mixtos de alcornoque (Quercus suber L.) y quejigo moruno (Q. canariensis Willd.) en el último siglo al norte del estrecho de Gibraltar, y se han relacionado con las actividades selvícolas y las series históricas de temperatura y precipitación. El nicho actual del alcornoque se ha expandido a expensas del quejigo, particularmente en las zonas más productivas con mayor precipi- tación media anual. Actualmente las dos especies coexisten a escala regional partir de los 800 mm de precipitación anual. A escala de paisaje la red de drenaje explica la distribución diferencial de las dos especies, con los quejigares claramente asociados a los hábitats más cercanos a los cursos de agua, y los alcornocales dominando en los rodales en laderas y zonas altas de la cuenca, incluso en zonas con un mayor coste de accesibilidad.
