Abstract

[EN]: The estuary of the Guadiana River (South West Iberian Peninsula) represents an ecosystem with high ecological and economic interest. There is a need to develop tools in order to fast and effectively assess the environmental quality of the estuary i.e. biodiversity, water quality, pollution, etc. This work specifically focuses on the use of a geochemical proxy to assess the sediment quality of the estuary. Lipids are a labile organic matter fraction prone to undergo rapid and significant alterations in its components, is responsive to environmental shifts and therefore an important source of environmental information. Moreover, the lipids are considered to be good markers to inform about the status of organic contamination and the general health/quality of the sediments. Sediment lipids monitoring over time can be also used to monitor possible contamination episodes or human-induced changes in the quality of the estuary.
