Abstract

Starting on the basis that the mechanical strength of a glass container in normal usage depends on the state of its surface, («glass does not grow, it is made»), a wide range of methods and systems for the protection of glass surfaces is described. These protecting systems, or surface treatments, as they are normally known, are complemented and/or substituted by later processes where the finished container is coated with other non-vitreous elements such as paper, plastic, etc. Each type of treatment: chemical, physical and both physical and chemical, is analyzed together with the processes of plastification and pre-labelling. In addition, the results obtained in the study of the influence of surface treatment on mechanical strength are described for several types of containeers. The paper concludes showing diagrams of both hot and cold treatment plants.
